The Climical Effects of Nifedipine in Patients with Bronchial Asthma

Abstract
We have investigated the effects of nifedipine on 30 asthmatics. In order to study the effects of the calcium antagonist nifedipine on expiratory flow rate, 30 asthmatic patients were given orally 40 mg of drugs for 7 days and FVC, FEV, and residual volume were measured before and after taking drugs.
The results were summerized as follows:
1. Predicted value of FVC before treatment were 85.3¡¾15.4% and it was increased 89.4¡¾15.0% after nifedipine (p<0.05).
2. Predicted value of residual volume were 121.5¡¾14.9% before treatment and it was decreased 113.0¡¾15.7% after nifedipine (p<0.05).
3. Predicted value of FEV, were 63.8 ¡¾ 13.2% before treatment and it was increased significantly 69.1¡¾14.6% after nifedipine (p<0.001).
4. No correlation could be established between the effect of nifedipine and the severity of the disease. From theses results, we conclude that nifedipine is effective to treat bronchial asthma patients, except the patients who get reflex bronchoconstriction.
